NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Princess Margaret Hospital is still facing severe overcrowding issues and is hoping to relieve some of the pressure by transferring more than 50 of its patients to Doctors Hospital West to allow for some much-needed repairs on the aging Shirley Street facility.

Overcrowding at the Princess Margaret Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic remains a challenge.

Public Hospitals Authority Managing Director Dr. Aubynette Rolle says they’re still challenged with providing beds for patients needing surgery.

To address the issue, the Public Hospitals Authority entered an agreement with Doctors Hospital to outsource patients to the Black Road facility for 14 weeks.

The move she says will also help to decompress PMH’s emergency room, in hopes of providing better care to patients there.

The agreement allows for 51 patients to be cared for at Doctors Hospital West.

On Sunday, Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Michael Darville said this will cost the government $2.5 million.

It will also allow PMH to carry out some much-needed repairs.
