NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, in 1962 the meeting between late U.S. President John F. Kennedy and U.K. Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, in Nassau was over.

The three-day meeting which began on December 18th was about the cancellation of the sky bolt air-to-ground missile series, culminating in a provisional agreement between the two.

The deal has been described as a landmark in military and political development in the western world. Kennedy was the first U.S. President to set foot on Bahamian soil.

Then in 1988, Carnival Crystal Palace Resort & Casino opened on the Cable Beach strip in Nassau.

Formerly known as the Cable Beach Hotel, the resort was purchased by Carnival Cruise Lines Inc which continued to develop and expand the hotel. 30 years later on October 1st, 2018, the historic Crystal Palace was demolished to make way for the billion-dollar Baha Mar Resort.

Finally, in 2017, Former Acting Chief Justice Sir Hartman Longley was sworn in as President of the Court of Appeal and Chief Justice.

Former Senior Justice Stephen Isaacs was named Acting Chief Justice at the same time. Following a seven-minute-long swearing-in ceremony, Sir Hartman took over from Dame Anita Allen.

He was knighted for his contributions to the country’s legal system.
