Uptick In Calls For For Assistance With Shelter
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – According to hotline volunteers and figures from the Department of Social Services’ national hotline statistics, the public is feeling much more of a struggle when it comes to housing.
NASSAU, BAHAMAS – According to hotline volunteers and figures from the Department of Social Services’ national hotline statistics, the public is feeling much more of a struggle when it comes to housing.
Chief Social Worker in the Department of Social Services, Seanalea Lewis, is also a hotline volunteer.
There were 69 calls into the national hotline for crisis intervention asking for assistance with shelter in 2019.
That rose to nearly 100 in 2020, and in the post-pandemic economy in 2022 saw 123 calls asking for assistance for shelter.
Lewis says dwindling inventory for affordable housing, especially for larger families is leaving many families out on the curb.
