NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Family Island Affairs Minister Clay Sweeting says government must ensure local government in the Family Islands are effective before it can be introduced to New Providence.

Speaking at the weekly press briefing, Sweeting was asked if serious consideration is being given to the local government for New Providence.

Last year, Sweeting suggested local government for New Providence wasn’t a priority item.

In the run-up to the last general election, the Progressive Liberal Party made several promises related to local government.

Among those promises was the introduction of a local government regime to New Providence.

The former Minnis administration made a similar promise ahead of its election back in 2017.
