NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A proposed bill that has been in the works for seven years according to officials may soon head to Parliament. The bill will focus on to giving inmates a second chance in society.

Giving second chances. That’s what National Security Ministry officials say the conditional release of offenders bill is all about.

At a town hall meeting, the first of several set to be held this summer, residents were educated on the proposed bill, what it contains and the benefits it will have for both the incarcerated and general public.

National Security Minister Wayne Munroe says the legislation will provide the country with a chance to do things differently.

This vast majority accounts for 98% of inmates currently at The Bahamas Department of Corrections. Acting commissioner at BDOCS Doan Cleare explains that the new system will work.

Cleare says those chosen will also be employed.

And what about the opinion that inmates should be made to serve their sentence without leniency?

Munroe says people should remember an important biblical lesson.
