NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On this day in Bahamian history, on September 18th, 1973, the Commonwealth of The Bahamas joined the United Nations. In his remarks that day then Prime Minister Sir Lynden Pindling expressed heartwarming thanks on behalf of the Bahamian people.

He also said the people of the Bahamas have similar aspirations and expectations as the billions of people who inhabit the earth and wish to live in peace, satisfy their needs, and not be dominated or coerced while also being free from interference in the conduct of their affairs.

Fast forward to 2015, then Progressive Liberal Party Leader Perry Christie announced he planned on seeking re-election as the party’s leader during the November convention.

In 2019… Irate teachers protested outside Carlton Francis Primary School. The furious teachers stood behind barricades as a dozen police officers guarded the school’s entrance.

The teachers were fed up as they demanded the removal of the school’s principal at the time.

Then in 2020, the Department of Social Services released a report revealing that domestic violence increased by two percent in the first nine months of COVID-19 pandemic.

At the time, then Department of Social Services Director of Gender and Family Affairs Dr. Jacinta Higgs said the study by the Department of Gender and Family Affairs in conjunction with the University of The Bahamas showed mothers were the ones that contributed towards the violence in terms of beating or rowing.
