Environmentalists: “Hard No” on Oil Drilling

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Environmentalists are slamming the government for not taking a hard stance against oil drilling when asked about the matter at COP26.

After the Minister of State for the Environment dodged questions about oil drilling at COP26, environmentalists are urging the government to take a hard stance against oil drilling.

Executive Director of ReEarth Sam Duncombe says she found it irresponsible for the government to spend money to go to the environmental conference without a position on the matter.

Solar power should not be a hard sell for The Bahamas – a country that experiences mostly sunny weather year-round. Duncombe questioned how countries can take The Bahamas seriously when it has no real plan to combat climate change.

Prime Minister Philip Davis suggested The Bahamas will look into selling some of its carbon credits in lieu of oil drilling — a move which Darville called foolhardy, considering the damaging practices successive governments have allowed.

Selling carbon credits may decrease another countries carbon footprint number on paper, but according to Darville it only gives them license to continue doing the things that damage the planet.
