Sustainability First: 2023 Hurricane Season Ends Today

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season ranks fourth in the top five when it comes to most named storms since 1950, with 20 named storms- seven of which made it to hurricane status, and three of them becoming major hurricanes of category 3 or higher.

To give you another perspective of just how many storms there were, there were only two names left on the list of names for the Atlantic Basin this year.

While The Bahamas is not one of the world’s great carbon emitters, we often bear the burden of the consequences of natural disasters.

So what can be done to make sure we’re more resilient?

• transition to greener energy like solar power or transitioning to more eco-friendly electric vehicles.

• when planning city areas, take drainage into account, some studies suggest increased urban green spaces can help create more space for water to flow and be absorbed. They’re also said to help make cities cooler by reducing the amount of heat trapped between buildings and absorbed by roads.  

• on a personal level, doing our best to get our assets insured to help ease recovery.
