GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – There appears to be some progress in Grand Bahama as demolition is set to begin for the construction of a new international airport.

Work is also underway for the new Carnival Celebration Cay project.

Recently the deputy prime minister announced that work is soon to begin on the new Grand Bahama International Airport, a move many Grand Bahamians have been calling for since the passage of Hurricane Dorian as they believe this will improve the island’s tourism product.

There’s been some concern about how the new airport will be constructed.

Pelican Bay Resort General Manager Magnus Alnebeck says the most important thing is that the airport is functional.

He is of the view that a new airport alone will not generate more airlift.

Now government has been tight-lipped about the sale of the Grand Lucayan Resort following the last announcement that fell through in 2022.

He admits the Grand Lucayan Resort is not an easy hotel to sell.

As for Carnival’s Celebration Cay project, Alnebeck says any economic activity is good for the island but he is unsure how much business owners across the entire island will benefit on a day-to-day basis.

The general manager is adamant that the solution to fixing the economic issue is the sale of the Grand Lucayan Resort.
