NASSAU, BAHAMAS – On March 26th, 1672 – the deadline set by the lords proprietors of Carolina for people to settle in the Bahama Islands with a land grant of 50 acres expired.

This offer was made to establish a sustainable colony in The Bahamas. It also included the promise that each free person would be granted an additional fifty acres of land for each dependent.

The first English settlement in The Bahamas was on Eleuthera. In 1670 after the King of England gave The Bahamas to the lords proprietors of the province of Carolina.

Fast forward to 2014, that’s when then Central and South Andros Member of Parliament Picewell Forbes apologized in Parliament for his laughter after then Tall Pines MP Leslie Miller joked in Parliament about abusing an ex-girlfriend earlier that year.

Forbes, who was sitting next to Miller at the time of his communication, had previously told the media that he had “nothing” to apologise for, as the comments made by Miller were said in “jest”.

Forbes went on record to express his objection to the physical abuse of women.

Then in 2020, Ministry of Health officials revealed covid cases were climbing after the first case of COVID-19 was reported on March 15th prompting a state of emergency.

Then Health Minister Dr. Duane Sands pleaded with residents to stay indoors.
