OCEAN CAY, BAHAMAS – Prime Minister Philip Davis pledging to develop The Bahamas Blue Economy. Davis made the comments as he praised MSC cruises during the groundbreaking ceremony for its conservation center on Ocean Cay, while also reiterating the need to operate responsibly.

Just 20 miles south of Alice Town Bimini lies MSC cruise’s private island, Ocean Cay.

The 95-acre island with 1.5 miles of beachfront property was the latest setting for Prime Minister Philip Davis to warn about climate change and its impact on The Bahamas.

He said his administration will tap into the blue economy.

Davis made the comments at the groundbreaking ceremony for MSC’s conservation center on Ocean Cay, where students from the University of Miami and Nova Southeastern University will conduct coral research.

The cruise industry is notorious for its history of unsustainability, pollution, and contribution to marine degradation.

Two years ago, Carnival Corp. was fined $20 million after admitting to dumping food and plastic waste in Bahamian waters.

But MSC Executive Chairman Pierfrancesco Vago says MSC is determined to be responsible in its operations, adding the island and soon-to-be constructed conservation center are proof of that.

Davis says MSC’s project is exactly the kind of initiative that his government wants to prioritize and called for MSC to be mindful of other issues.
