Sports In The Community
Grove Made Empire and Akephran International Academy launched a new initiative to expose their students to the many academic and professional opportunities sports can provide.
The community-based organization hosted Athletes Day at the school’s campus in Fox Hill where students received insight from various athletes.
Grove Made was founded by Duran Cartwright and Zach Pennerman, using sports as a vehicle to positively impact the youth.
A wide cross section of sports were represented on the panel, highlighted by veteran pro volleyball player Shonari Hepburn who has played professionally in several European countries including Romania, Estonia, and Finland.
Pennerman, along with former Akhepran students Jaden Strachan and Saheed Sanusi represented basketball, while Charles Sealy discussed sports performance and Stephen Curtis represented baseball.
Baseball
Curtis, a former player at Jackson State University, has now entered the coaching ranks locally.
Hearing the stories of the various athletes left an indelible impression on the students.
The Bahamas has produced lots of professional baseball players, but only one is taking the path of trying to be a pitcher and outfielder.
Janero Miller, a two-way prospect for the Miami Marlins, is about to begin his second season of pro baseball in the Dominican Summer League.
Miller spent last season as an everyday outfielder and a member of the pitching staff.
As an outfielder, he hit .239 with 10 RBI and four stolen bases.
On the mound, Miller had 10 appearances and recorded 22 strikeouts in 28 innings.
WNBA
The preseason is complete and tipoff is just days away for Jonquel Jones and her New York Liberty.
Jones finished with 7 points and 4 boards last night in the Liberty’s 82-79 win over the Connecticut Sun.
The starters again played sparingly ahead of the regular season opener Tuesday on the road against the Washington Mystics.
10YS Plays of the Week
The weekend is here, but before we celebrate mothers…let’s celebrate these top plays.
Let’s get started at number five with NCAA conference championships. Wanya McCoy easing to the 200m finals at the SEC Champs in 20.45 seconds.
At number four – last week Daunte earned AAC Player of the Week with some ridiculous numbers…he’s keeping that going this week with a leadoff triple against Arkansas State.
Coming in at number three – one of the few instances where the social media handle lives up to the hype, Speedy Stevie returns to the Diamond League and gets the win in Doha, 44.76 seconds.
At number two – one pitch, one swing, one home run, Jazz Chisholm goes yard.
And at number one – we’re not allowed to show video, but you had to be there man…everything was perfect – we had confidence just knowing we would have the lead after Stevie, Shania becoming a legend on that second leg, Alonzo running his 573rd 400 of the weekend, and Shaunae just being Shaunae…
