NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Residents watched with concern this afternoon as the bushfire near Coral Harbour continued to rage, causing dense smoke and low visibility.

Last night, interim president of The Bahamas Fishing Association Keith Caroll spoke to media about his concerns for traps estimated to be worth near a million dollars.

As of this afternoon, the traps still seemed untouched by the fire.

But Coral Harbour resident Deborah Russell tells us she’s concerned for our capacity to contain the fire.

And those power concerns proved to be valid as earlier this afternoon, Bahamas Power and Light announced an emergency shutdown of several primary feeders in western New Providence because of the fire.

Multiple areas in western New Providence, including the Lynden Pindling International Airport, were listed as areas that would be impacted.

As the fire threatens to crawl north, with videos showing flames nearing Odyssey Airport, and smoke causing the grounding of flights for a period at the Lynden Pindling International Airport today, one prayer was echoed by most in the area: prayers for rain.
