Acklins Chief Councilor: He Was A Mentor

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A. Loftus Roker was born August 25, 1935, in Delectable Bay, Acklins. He rose to high office, serving as Minister of National Security and Immigration Minister under the Pindling administration.

But his impact was felt in Acklins, where he called home.

Roker served as the island’s first chief councilor and was credited for multiple developments like the island’s clinic.

Current Acklins Chief Councilor Marvin Campbell says Roker was the reason he got into local government.

Roker obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of London and Middle Temple in 1961. He was called to the bar in 1962.

He ran in the 1968 general election and successfully contested his seat to become the representative for the Nicholls Town and Berry Island constituency.

Campbell says he was a true leader.

In a statement, Prime Minister Philip Davis said Roker was a distinguished statesman and an advocate for justice and security.

He said his contributions during critical periods of our history were pivotal, driven by his passion for our nation’s prosperity and a deeply held belief in the Bahamian spirit.

Free National Movement leader Michael Pintard called him a Bahamian patriot.

Roker died at Doctor’s Hospital on Monday. He was 88.
