Competition Heats Up In National Team Scrimmages

ATHENS, GREECE – After 20 hours of travel, Team Bahamas has arrived in Athens, Greece and is ready to compete.

Team Bahamas got their first look at full five-on-five competitive scrimmages.

It brought out the intensity and competitive nature the players know that they will need headed into the most important games in Bahamas basketball history.

Framed as new school versus the old school, the game went into overtime before the “old school” group won 72-65 in overtime.

Vj Edgecombe was one of the standouts, impressing Deandre Ayton, and showing he belongs with the big boys.

Team Bahamas has a few more days of practice before they tip off the Aegean Acropolis Tournament here in Athens.

They will face Montenegro Wednesday in the first international friendly.

Swimming

The 52nd Bahamas Aquatics Nationals came to a close over the weekend – Lamar Taylor and Rhanishka Gibbs are headed to Paris, while Mako Aquatics tops the points standings once again.

Mako delivered a dominant performance at the Betty Kelly Kenning Aquatics Center to claim their sixth consecutive national title.

The club totaled 2895 points to finish well ahead of the field and second place finisher – Barracuda Swim Club with 1501 points.

Alpha Aquatics was third with 1143 points.

The highlight of the meet for the seniors, the selection of the Bahamas’ swim team for the Paris Olympics.

Bahamas Aquatics president Algernon Cargill announced that Gibbs and Taylor will represent Team Bahamas by virtue of leading all Bahamian swimmers in FINA Aquapoints.

They will coached by Travano McPhee.

Gibbs, a freshman at TCU totaled 740.80 while Taylor, an incoming Tennessee transfer totaled 856.20 points.

Among Gibbs’ four gold medals at nationals was a new personal best in the 50 fly in 27.50 seconds.

Taylor finished first in both the 50 free and 100 free.

Baseball

It was a sweep for Freedom Farm Baseball League in the junior divisions at the Bahamas Baseball Association’s Andre Rodgers Junior National Championships .

The farmers won the 8u, 10u, 12u, and 14u divisions over the weekend at Emera Baseball Complex in Grand Bahama.

All of the Freedom Farm teams went undefeated in round-robin play in the group stage.

The medal rounds were canceled Sunday afternoon due to inclement weather, thus, the top ranked farmers were awarded the gold in all divisions.

This brings an end to the two part BBA Nationals for 2024.

The senior nationals were hosted earlier this month in New Providence. 

JBLN  took the 16u division and Community Baseball League won the 23u division.

MLB

Jazz Chisholm had another productive weekend at the plate for the Miami Marlins.

The Marlins celebrated another edition of Bahamian heritage night on Saturday and the weekend brought a successful homestand to a close on a winning note.

On Saturday, Chisholm went 1-2 before he left the game early with right bicep tightness in a 9-0 loss.

Back on the field Sunday, Chisholm went 2-4 with a double and scored a run in the Marlins 6-4 win to take 2 of 3 from Seattle.

Miami concluded the 6-game homestand at 4-2.
