NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The country could see changes to the Immigration Act in the very near future, according to Attorney General Ryan Pinder.

Megan Shepherd has more.

Attorney General Ryan Pinder tells reporters the government will advance legislative amendments to the Immigration Act as it relates to some of the inequalities regarding citizenship.

Pinder says unlike in the past, this administration will not seek to handle the matter through a referendum.

Attorney at law and former senator, Lisa Bostwick Dean, calling the announcement an absolutely necessary change. She says despite difficulties, she believes all political parties are finally on the same page.

She says she agrees with the government’s route to make the change via legislation.

However, Bostwick Dean says she believes these amendments are still not comprehensive enough, noting that Bahamian men do not have the same rights as Bahamian women when it comes to having a child out of wedlock.
