AFRICA – The World Health Organization declared monkeypox a public health emergency of international concern on Wednesday, citing a surge in cases worldwide.

W.H.O. Director General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, made the announcement after an emergency committee meeting.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has reportedly seen over 14,000 cases and 524 deaths this year.

Centers for Disease control says over 1600 cases have been reported in the U.S. this year, more than double last year’s count, but far below the 2022 outbreak levels.
