NASSAU, BAHAMAS – While Helene has weakened to a depression, it slammed into the Florida coast at a Category 4 storm.
Helene formed in the Caribbean sea on Tuesday as a tropical storm.
Forecasters warned the storm could strengthen into a major hurricane as it moved toward the southeast United States, and that’s just what happened.
It slammed into Florida around midnight, leaving many without power, some with flood damage.
Lolani Green is a Bahamian who lives in Tallahassee. She says where she lives she avoided a direct hit.
She says due to her experiencing many hurricanes in her lifetime, she was able to help her family and others prepare.
Tampa, also got its fair share of heavy rain fall. Several videos obtained by Our News from a Bahamian we interviewed Thursday, showed heavy flooding with strong winds.
College student Hope Smith says she along with other international students at St. Leo University were instructed to evacuate.
She says despite going in the opposite direction to Gainesville, Florida, they still experienced bad weather.
As of news time, Helene has been downgraded to a tropical depression as it moves over the Carolinas.
