“You Don’t Knock People Down and Leave Them Like Dog”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A dark patch of grass marked the final resting place of a man who was struck and killed on Strachan Boulevard. Residents in the area say they knew him as “Bethel.”

Officers believe the man may have been there for some time as rigor mortis had already set in. Police currently have no leads on who committed the crime.

A resident, Dingo Rolle, shared his thoughts on the victim.

“Was a neighbor, a friendly neighbor. He always passed through, you know what I mean. All of us live on the same road, right through here. He passed every day, you know what I mean, he passed to go to work, he passed coming from work, you understand me. He was an alright neighbor, I ain’t gonna tell no lie. You know what I mean, he didn’t bother no one. I mean, he had his little cocktail now and then, but otherwise, he was alright.”

At the scene this morning, the victim’s dogs were seen searching for their owner, a fact that was not missed by neighbors.

Deborah Mortimer, another resident, expressed her shock at the news, noting that the victim normally didn’t frequent that side of the community.

“He was a nice man, ’cause when I used to sell some soda and stuff, he used to come and buy them. He wasn’t troublesome. But he always went the left way, like by the beauty shack. I never knew him to come this way, but he was a nice person.”

CCTV cameras could be seen on surrounding buildings, and police say they will be reviewing the footage to assist with the investigation. In the meantime, the community is reeling from the shock.

“At the end of the day, it’s a handicapped man, you understand me? And that’s taking advantage of the situation like that. You understand me? Even if you knock somebody, I think you should stop and check out the person, ’cause it could be your brother, your sister.”

“It made me feel sad, ’cause although he ain’t nothing to me, I feel bad for them because he’s a human being. You don’t knock down people and leave them like a dog. But I pray justice for him. I pray that they’ll catch the killer or whoever did it, in Jesus’ name.”
