NEW YORK, U.S.A. – It was my first time covering the WNBA Finals and of all places, in what many dub the sports capital of the world, New York.

It was a night of highs and lows but when it was all said done the New York Liberty brought home the city’s first championship in 27 years, beating out the Minnesota Lynx 67-62 in an overtime thriller.

But even more fulfilling for me as a journalist was the fact that our very own Jonquel Jones snagged the coveted finals MVP trophy.

She also reflected on her roots.

“When the journey started I was just a little kid in The Bahamas shooting hoops in Holmes Rock,” she said.

JJ, as she is affectionately known by most, scored 17 points snagged six rebounds and had one assist in the decisive game 5 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Now once celebrations conclude in New York, heres what she hopes can happen – a parade right here in The Bahamas with her teammates included.

And thats not it, the 2021 league MVP has more plans for her team in The Bahamas.

“We want to do a preseason game but I definitely think that can happen,” Jones said. “I definitely think we have everything that we need especially in Nassau.”
