PM Announces Police Commissioner’s Resignation, HOA Erupts Into Chaos

Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander has resigned, and a new commissioner is on the way. Prime Minister Philip Davis made the shocking announcement in the House of Assembly this morning. However, it was not the biggest shock of the day, as chaos erupted during the session, culminating in police forcibly removing opposition members after Free National Movement (FNM) Deputy Leader Shanendon Cartwright hurled the mace out of the House of Assembly window. Berthony McDermott reports on the unprecedented day of events.

“Madam Speaker… I have accepted his resignation.”

The resignation comes in the wake of public outcry over a damning U.S. indictment.

The indictment names Chief Superintendent of Police Elvis Curtis, Officer-in-Charge of the Airport Division; Sergeant Prince Symonette, who works with Curtis; and RBDF Chief Petty Officer Darrin Roker as conspirators who helped facilitate the transshipment of tons of cocaine from South America through The Bahamas and into the U.S.

The resignation of the commissioner follows a plan outlined by Fernander to address corruption within the force. Prime Minister Davis, however, dismissed suggestions that the resignation indicated wrongdoing.

The resignation also comes one week after protests by the Coalition of Independents and just hours after a demonstration by the FNM demanding resignations over the scandal.

In a dramatic turn, Parliament ended abruptly after the mace was thrown out of the window, and opposition members were forcibly removed by police. Opposition Leader Michael Pintard responded to the resignation.
