WASHINGTON DC, UNITED STATES – Visitors gathered Tuesday to honor former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, known for his historic post-presidency, as he lay in state at the U.S. Capitol.

Carter’s body will remain in the Rotunda for three days, allowing the public and lawmakers to pay their respects.

A funeral service is planned for Thursday at the Washington National Cathedral.

The 39th president, who served from 1977 to 1981, passed away on December 29th at the age of 100.
