NASSAU, BAHAMAS – One Abaco resident recounting her experience, saying life as she knew it, is no more.

Meet Cara Butler Wight, a lawyer, originally from New Providence. She took a leap of faith over 20 years ago and moved to the island of Abaco for a simpler life.

But life was far from simple when hurricane Dorian slammed into Abaco in September 2019.

Butler Wight says she was fully prepared for the storm but something about hurricane Dorian felt different once it began to approach Abaco.

Shortly after, a tornado split her house in two, forcing her and her son, who was nine-years-old at the time, to take shelter in a closet until it was safe to evacuate to a shelter.

Eventually she was transported to New Providence injured, but grateful to be alive.

Butler Wight then moved back to New Providence where she had to rebuild her life.

She says looking back, it’s still hard mentally.

As for the rebuilding process on Abaco, she says it will take time.
