NASSAU, THE BAHAMAS – As the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season gets underway, one local company is helping to ensure disaster response teams are ready for whatever may come.

AML Foods this week donated $5,000 to the Bahamas Red Cross Society’s Disaster Risk Fund, a contribution officials say will help strengthen preparedness efforts across the country. Our Chinasa Outten reports.

Red Cross President Edison Sumner says the contribution comes at a critical time as the organization continues to prepare for potential storms and emergencies during the months ahead.

“The funds are going to be used to support, in this instance, our disaster risk management strategies, because we are now right at the beginning of our hurricane season. We are just a week in. We want to be sure that our resources are in place in the event that we are facing any kind of a storm this year.” – Edison Sumner

AML Foods Marketing Events Manager Naomi Grant says supporting the Red Cross is an easy decision given the important role the organization plays in communities across the country.

“We love to donate towards them. We love to support them because we believe in the work that they do. We know that when we give to the Red Cross, it’s going to go to a good cause. As you have already heard already, what it is that they’re going to be doing is the hurricane relief, and we know that in the Bahamas, that is absolutely something that is very necessary.” – Naomi Grant

Sumner says part of the donation will be used immediately to strengthen the organization’s capacity through training and coordination efforts with leaders from across the family islands.

“The exciting news is that the funds that are being donated today are actually going to assist in bringing in our family island leaders to New Providence to take part in two days of workshops as a part of our Central Council meeting.” – Edison Sumner

The Red Cross says those workshops will help ensure volunteers and leaders are better prepared to respond quickly and effectively should a storm impact any part of The Bahamas this season.
