NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Eight months after their home was destroyed in the Jennie Street fire, one family received the keys to their brand new home in Sir Lynden Pindling Estates.

Cherika Johnson reports.

Granville and Juliette Brown were among several families left homeless last May when a fire on Jennie Street destroyed six homes and damaged four others. Now, they’re turning the key to their new home in Sir Lynden Pindling Estates.

“If life throws you something that you’re not prepared for, you take the time, you sit back and you analyze, how can I learn from this, how can I benefit from this?,” said Juliette Brown, remembering what she experienced after the fire.

“We have tragedies, but there is always a learning curve. My learning curve was, we will never rent again.”

Arawak homes presented keys to the two-bed, two bath home to the Browns and their three children on Monday afternoon.

“When Mrs. Brown and Mr. Brown and their children would have watched… everything physically being burned. From that day to now, we are here to celebrate,” says Franon Wilson, President of Arawak Homes.

Juliette Brown was tearful as she recalled the financial sacrifice her family made to purchase the home. She says she is thankful for the partnership between Arawak Homes and First Caribbean International Bank.

“It was really a lot of sacrificing and commitment and just knowing that I couldn’t have this again,” she said.

“Unlike the other fire victims, they had their properties to build back on. My family and I were the biggest losers because we didn’t own anything. For us, I couldn’t make that mistake again, to have nothing.”
