UNITED KINGDOM – Caribbean activists and researchers are calling two days of meetings in Europe a major step forward in the fight for slavery reparations.

Delegates from Barbados, Jamaica, Haiti, Suriname, and other CARICOM nations held high-level talks in Brussels and London last week, rallying support from lawmakers in the European Union and the U.K.

The group is backed by the repair campaign, a movement based on CARICOM’s 10-point plan for reparatory justice.

In Brussels they met with E.U. parliamentarians from countries including France, Spain, and Ireland. In London, they held briefings with MPs who expressed strong support.

Campaign Founder Denis O’Brien says the meetings were just the beginning of a global political push to address what he calls a historic injustice.
