U.S.A. – Deandre Ayton continues to work his way back to form after last month’s finger injury that kept him sidelined for two weeks.

Ayton finished with 18 points and seven rebounds in his Portland Trailblazers’ 137-131 loss to the Dallas Mavericks Sunday night at the American Airlines center in Dallas, Texas.

Over the course of the season, Ayton is averaging 14.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game on 55 percent shooting from the field.

On November 27, Ayton stepped back into the starting lineup after he had missed the trail blazers’ previous seven games with a deep contusion in his right index finger.

In his first game back he had 16 points and 12 rebounds in a 121-114 loss to Indiana and followed with 26 points and nine rebounds to lead the Blazers to a 115-106 win over the Sacramento Kings.

Golf

Sports tourism in The Bahamas continues its busy winter schedule with the return of the Hero World Challenge.

The Hero World Challenge, hosted by Tiger Woods, is a 20-man event at Albany golf course which features some of the top names in the sport.

The four-day, 72-hole, event takes place december 5-8 for the 25th time, and the 10th consecutive year at Albany.

Woods will not play in this year’s event due to back issues, but the field of 20 players includes some of the best in the world.

World number 1 and defending champion Scottie Scheffler headlines a field which also includes number 5 Ludvig Aberg, and number 6 Wyndham Clark.

Golf Channel, NBA and Peacock will have live coverage of all four days of the event

There is a $5 million total purse with $1 million going to the winner.

NCAA Track and Field& Field

The last time Lacarthea Cooper was making headlines, it was a question of whether or not she was headed to Paris – well we know for certain that she’s head to Las Vegas this fall.

Cooper will join the UNLV Running Rebels programming for the upcoming fall campaign after spending two seasons in junior college.

Cooper concluded her juco career with a national title for New Mexico Junior College. She won the 400m title in 53.65 seconds at the NJCAA Championships in west Monroe, Louisiana.

She also finished fourth in the 200m final in 23.82 seconds.

Cooper and the Thunderbird women won their second consecutive njcaa outdoor title and the fifth in school history.

She improved on both finishes from the 2023 championships, when she finished fourth in the 400m in 53.08 seconds and fifth in the 200m in 23.45 seconds.

Cooper has been named to two Olympic Teams for The Bahamas – 2021 in Tokyo – when she had to opt out due to covid 19 and the 2024 games in Paris.

Rowing

The Nassau Rowing Club continues its community outreach effort in the local public school system.

The opportunities and access rowing program moved to H.O. Nash Junior school.

The program has previously hosted students from D.W. Davis, C.R. Walker and C.V. Bethel.

With oars, the rowing club looks to increase access to and awareness of the sport of rowing among Bahamians from under-resourced backgrounds and communities.
