SWITZERLAND – G7 leaders are expressing new hope for peace in Ukraine after the country’s president met with U.S. President Donald Trump during the summit in Switzerland.

Trump said Russia should make peace with Ukraine following what he described as a “very good” meeting.

The remarks have sparked cautious optimism among Western leaders that progress toward ending the war may finally be possible.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Trump appeared cooperative and attentive during discussions, raising hopes for stronger coordination between Europe and the United States.

European diplomats said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy showed Trump images of damage caused by a recent Russian strike in Kyiv, a move that reportedly left an impression on the U.S. president.

While Trump criticized the attack, he stopped short of committing to additional American sanctions.
