NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Today is National Culture Day, and this year, officials are using the occasion to highlight national wellness initiatives.

“Bahamas is a good place…[The] Bahamas is the best in the world and that’s why the song says it’s better in The Bahamas,” she said.

That timeless motto has become synonymous with Bahamian pride.

Expressions of culture like Rake n’ Scrape, Junkanoo and handcrafted artworks embody a spirit of joy and freedom.

Paired with our golden shores and crystal clear waters, many agree that The Bahamas is arguably one of the best places to live.

This independence season, officials have dedicated National Culture Day to promoting physical, emotional and mental wellness.

Some residents admit that healthy lifestyles can be costly, and life gets challenging sometimes, but they encourage Bahamians to hold on to their strong spiritual roots, incorporate wellness into their daily lives and tap into the natural resources around us.

One resident expressed that the environment itself can be a source of healing.

Another resident, Georgette Gardiner, says that mental health needs to be taken more seriously.

“…I must tell you first we must deal with our mental health first,…mental health I think is more important than than you worrying about your diabetes or hypertension because why? The mind is a serous thing,” she said.

However, here’s her advice:

“On that note I would encourage persons to pray, utilize our beautiful beaches, relax and just enjoy [ourselves],” she said.
