It was the “Get him!” heard around the world… The jaw-dropping turn of events breaking out in the House of Assembly Wednesday after St. Barnabas MP, Shanendon Cartwright, threw the speaker’s mace out the window, making waves in world news the past 24 hours. With coverage in major media networks like the BBC and Al Jazeera in the Middle East, it’s even been translated and dubbed in German.

In the U.S., the story was shared by Yahoo and MSN.

Media powerhouses ABC News and Newsweek focused instead on the resignation of the police commissioner. Newsweek describing in its story the “scandal” of high-ranking law enforcement officers being named in a U.S. indictment alleging a “massive cocaine importation conspiracy enabled by corrupt Bahamian government officials,” and its potential to, quote, “reshape Bahamian politics and law enforcement for years to come.”

But the news of the House drama has gone even further, spreading as far as Kenyan, Indian, and even Australian news outlets, all pointing to the historical significance of the ceremonial mace throwing and its connection to 1965’s “Black Tuesday.”
