GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – For the next few days, the country has an opportunity to celebrate Bahamian history as we welcome home the WNBA champion and Finals MVP – Jonquel Jones.
The Holmes Rock native arrived Thursday morning to a welcome reception at the Grand Bahama Airport.
On Friday at 10am, Jones will go on a series of school visits, culminating in an honoring ceremony.
On Saturday, Jones will be celebrated with a motorcade through the streets beginning at 10am, followed by a basketball clinic at the St. George’s Gym at 2pm.
Following the clinic, celebrations will shift to New Providence with Jones’ arrival at LPIA at 7:30pm.
On Monday, November 18 there will be Junkanoo rushout at the Sports Center at 3:45pm, followed by a press conference at 4pm, and a basketball clinic at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium at 4:15pm.
Last month, Jones and the rest of the New York Liberty hit the streets of Brooklyn to officially celebrate the franchise’s first WNBA title following their win over the Minnesota Lynx.
The city honored the newly crowned champions with a ticker tape parade and now the celebration for the MVP heads home..
NCAA Basketball
Fredrick King and Deyton Albury had season highs Wednesday night in lopsided wins for their respective programs.
King finished with 11 points for the no.14 ranked Creighton Bluejays in their 78-43 win over the Houston Christian Huskies.
He shot 5-6 from the field and added two blocked shots in just over 14 minutes off the bench.
With the win, the Bluejays improved to 3-0 and head coach Greg McDermott became the winningest coach in program history with 328.
Deyton Albury and the Utah State Aggies opened the season with their third straight 100 point outing to begin the season.
Albury finished with nine points, six rebounds, and six assists in the Aggies’ 117-53 win over the Westminster griffins.
The Aggies lead grew to 67 on Albury’s dunk in the final minute.
Regatta
Sailors around the country are preparing for the seventh edition of the Best of the Best regatta.
The event will be hosted December 5-8 at the Montagu foreshore.
Event organizers have called it one of the most significant events on the annual regatta calendar.
Hundreds of sailors will compete for bragging rights in class A, B, C and D.
Class A features nine boats, class B has eight boats, class C includes 36 sloops and the D class has 32.
Bahamas Bowl
We’re just a few weeks away from announcing the 2025 Bahamas Bowl participants so it’s time for our weekly check in from the mac and Conference-USA.
The inaugural Bahamas Bowl winners – Western Kentucky Hilltoppers – remained in a first place tie atop Conference USA with a 41-28 win over new Mexico State.
In the player spotlight, UTEP quarterback Skyler Locklear completed 28 of 33 passes for 327 yards and four touchdowns in a 43-35 win over Kennesaw State.
In the mac, the 2017 Bahamas Bowl winners – Ohio bobcats – became officially bowl eligible with a 41-0 shutout of Kent State.
Northern Illinois running back Telly Johnson Jr. had 23 carries for 141 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-28 win over Western Michigan.
