GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – The sculpture was created by Grand Bahamian Artist Antoine John.

Grand Bahama Port Authority President Ian Rolle describing the statue as one of the most meaningful sculptures on the island and quite possibly, the country.

He says the port authority not only wanted to rename the downtown area from “the Churchill Square” to “Independence Square” but also erect the statue as a way to continue to keep the historic moment at the forefront for generations to come.

Consultant for Access Accelerator, activist and former politician Loretta Butler-Turner also on hand for the unveiling.

She shares that she lived in Grand Bahama in the 1980s and is aware of what the island once was and could become.
