More Bahamians Qualify for D-I National Championships

UNITED STATES – Bahamian student-athletes will be well represented at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in Eugene after a series of standout performances at the NCAA Regionals.

Calea Jackson of Miami qualified in the discus with a career-best throw of 58.26 meters, while Antone Smith of Arizona advanced in the men’s triple jump with a mark of 16.59 meters.

The women’s 400 meters will feature four Bahamians, led by Javonya Valcourt, who ran 50.26 seconds. Quincy Penn clocked a personal-best 50.78, Lacarthea Cooper posted a personal-best 51.53, and Collinique Farrington ran 51.89.All four also helped their schools qualify for the NCAA Championships in the women’s 4×400-meter relay.

In the sprint relays, Zion Campbell helped the Minnesota Golden Gophers win their heat in 38.71 seconds and finish second overall in the men’s 4×100-meter relay, advancing to nationals for the third time in the last four years.

Troynelle Miller and the Central Arkansas Bears also made history, qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the women’s 4×100-meter relay with a time of 44.57 seconds. The performance marks the first time Central Arkansas will have women’s representation at the NCAA Championship meet.

The NCAA Championships run June 10-13 at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Track and Field

Bahamian track stars Devynne Charlton and Shaunae Miller-Uibo continued their strong Diamond League campaigns on Sunday in Rabat.

Charlton finished second in the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 12.40 seconds, while Miller-Uibo took fourth place in the women’s 200 meters in 22.42.

The results keep both Bahamians among the leaders in the Diamond League standings.

Charlton has accumulated 13 points through three meets to rank third in the 100-meter hurdles, while Miller-Uibo has 19 points to lead the 200-meter field.

The Diamond League circuit continues June 12 in Oslo.

High School Soccer Nationals

History was made at the Samuel P. Haven Jr. National High School Soccer Championships on Friday at the Roscow A.L. Davies Soccer Fields.

The Lyford Cay International School Dragons captured their third straight senior girls national title with a dominant 5-0 win over the C.R. Walker Senior High School Lady Knights.

Alethea Tsoumpas led the way with a brace as LCIS continued its dynasty.

On the boys’ side, Anatol Rodgers High School etched its name in the history books, claiming the school’s first-ever senior boys national championship. Jayden Gustave scored the match’s only goal in the 22nd minute as the Timberwolves defeated LCIS 1-0.

The victory carried extra meaning for Anatol Rodgers, which fell in the 2024 championship match on penalties. Two years later, the Timberwolves completed their redemption story with a historic national title.
