Mother Accused of Injuring 11-Year-Old Daughter During At-Home Abortion

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A mother is accused of injuring her 11-year-old daughter while performing an abortion at home. 

The 40-year-old allegedly gave her daughter medicine to induce an abortion after learning that she was pregnant.

Meanwhile, the mother’s 45-year-old boyfriend is accused of sexually abusing the girl. Prosecutors say the sexual abuse began in April 2022, when the girl was 10 and continued until May 2023 when she turned 11.

Their names have been withheld to protect the identity of the minor.

The man is charged with five counts of unlawful sexual intercourse with a dependent.

The mother is charged with aggravated causing harm, abortion and failing to report the sexual abuse of a minor.

The aggravated causing harm and abortion allegedly took place between August 11 and 12.

The mother allegedly failed to report the sexual abuse of her child between July 1, 2023 and August 11.

They were not required to enter pleas when they appeared before Senior Magistrate Shaka Serville.Bail was denied and they return to court on January 15, 2024 to receive voluntary bill of indictment papers
