NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Less than 10% of students who sat The Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations got at least a “C” or higher in 3 core subjects. The numbers were revealed after the release of the 2022 national examinations.

4,906 candidates sat the Bahamas General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations in 2022, a decrease compared to the 5,147 candidates last year.

Of the nearly 5,000 students who sat the BGCSE exams. 633 candidates received a “C” or higher in 5 or more subjects. While 392 or 8% of candidates received at least a “C” in English, Mathematics and a science.

Mathematics and English Language were among the top subscribed BGCSE subjects and females continue to out perform male students.

As it relates to the Bahamas Junior Certificate, this year only 22 more candidates sat examinations compared to last year.

The 2022 exams represent the third-year that students sat national exams in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the start of the pandemic many students alternated between face to face and online learning.

Education Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin has said her ministry is working to address a learning loss brought on by the pandemic.
