UNITED STATES – Nearly 1,000 immigration arrests were carried out on Sunday as US President Donald Trump’s promise of mass deportations ramps up.

The sanctuary city of Chicago has been a focus of the raids, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement also targeting areas in Miami and New Jersey.

The issue of immigration also caused a spat between Trump and the Colombian government, after two US military flights carrying deported migrants were barred from landing.

The Trump administration threatened to slap tariffs on Colombian exports to the US, and the Colombian government later agreed to let the planes land.

Trump is also expected sign three executive orders on Monday which relate to the military.
A White House spokesperson said the orders would involve transgender military service members, reinstating troops who were discharged for refusing the Covid vaccine, and diversity, equity and inclusion programmes in the military.
