UNITED KINGDOM – After more than eight years in office Scottish Leader Nicola Sturgeon says she plans to step down.

The announcement coming amid criticism of her drive to expand transgender rights and her strategy for achieving independence from the United Kingdom.

In a news conference at her official residence in Edinburgh, Sturgeon said the decision wasn’t a response to the “Latest period of pressure” adding that part of serving well was knowing when to make way for someone else.

Sturgeon said she planned to remain in office until a new leader is elected.
