UNITED STATES – Consumer confidence in the U.S. has plunged to its lowest level since the start of the pandemic.

The conference board says its index dropped sharply in April as fears over inflation, tariffs, and a possible recession grow.

Nearly a third of Americans expect hiring to slow, and a separate poll shows half worry the economy could tip into a downturn.

Tariffs imposed by former President Trump, including a 145% tax on Chinese goods, are fueling anxiety.

Spending is already slowing with fewer people planning to buy cars, homes, or even dine out.
