NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A local fitness instructor is reaching out and creating an avenue for autistic children to stay fit at a reasonable cost.

Lavardo Smith of Autism Fitness says it is time for more action when it comes to assisting the autistic community.

Smith says the program came from a personal interaction with someone close to him whose child is autistic.

Smith shut down half of his Carmichael Road fitness facility to cater to autistic fitness.

The two-week-old after-school program is open from 3 to 5:30 pm.

From his personal experience, Smith knows caring for an autistic child can be expensive.

So far, he says the response has been tremendous.

The session only accommodates up to three children at a time.

He says the children in the program have been enjoying it.

But he says sometimes parents aren’t too open to getting the help needed for their children.

Corporate companies like Danbrand and Ulearn which has an autism program along with a few special ed teachers have joined the cause but Smith is appealing to other corporate companies to get on board.
