PUERTO RICO – Puerto Rico was hit by a massive island-wide blackout Wednesday after energy plants unexpectedly shut down, according to the local power company Genera.

The company says it’s working to bring backup units online while investigating the cause.

The outage, which started around 12:40 P.M., left homes and businesses scrambling as residents lined up for fuel to power their generators.

Energy provider Luma confirmed all plants were still offline by mid-afternoon.

Governor Jenniffer González said updates would follow once there’s more clarity on the cause and timeline for full restoration.
