Two Bahamians in Custody After Failed Smuggling Ring

GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Arrests have been made in that failed smuggling operation that took place in waters off Bootle Bay, West End, Monday morning.

Our News understands two Bahamian men, who are residents of West End, are in custody.

The 27 and 35-year-olds were reportedly captured onshore near where the vessel capsized.

A vehicle belonging to alleged smugglers contained food, clothing and other essentials including toiletries was found nearby.

The men are facing smuggling and other serious charges as 11 Haitian nationals, including a pregnant woman, as well as two Chinese nationals, two Ecuadorians, three Grand Bahamians and a man from New Providence were all rescued by police.

Reports say the 19 people were headed to the United States when a 33 foot blue Midnight Express began taking on water.

The alleged smuggling vessel is similar to a boat that was recently reported stolen in Abaco.
