NASSAU, BAHAMAS – U.S. ambassador Herschel Walker responds to reporters on Thursday when asked whether the redaction of a politician’s name in a U.S. criminal complaint suggested a lack of trust in Bahamian authorities.

According to a criminal complaint filed in the U.S District Court for the Southern District of New York Friday, a Bahamian politician was allegedly caught on a wiretap with an undercover U.S. Drug Enforcement Agent inside Parliament in 2024 discussing a possible drug deal.

The name of that politician was withheld from the public documents.

The complaint also names Bahamian national Jonathan Eric Gardiner, who investigators claim was moving tons of cocaine through The Bahamas with the protection of government officials and high-ranking politicians.

Investigators say Gardiner was arrested after an Election Day plane crash in waters off Florida, where he was allegedly found with $30,000 in cash.

A photo included in the evidence showed cash inside a bag marked with a redacted name labeled “Politician-1.”

Then on Thursday, the U.S. ambassador dismissed suggestions that the redaction was tied to a distrust of local authorities.

Herschel Walker – U.S. Ambassador

“You know, sometimes people just don’t understand the reason why, and I don’t think no one understood the reason why. I think that was more of it than anything else.”

Walker was questioned by reporters following his courtesy call and tour of the BTVI Old Trail Road campus.

Before being rushed away by his detail, the ambassador was also asked whether he believes The Bahamas is doing enough to combat corruption linked to narcotics trafficking.

Walker points to what he called a strong partnership between The Bahamas and the United States in the fight against transnational crime.

Herschel Walker – U.S. Ambassador

“I think The Bahamas and the U.S., we’re working together. I think this is a combined effort. So I think we’re working together, and I think that’s what makes it such a good thing….”
