NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Eighty percent of women of African descent will experience symptoms of fibroids at one point. While you can’t prevent it, you can mitigate the symptoms.
But as Interventional Radiologist at Family Medicine Center, Dr. Mikhail Higgins says a hormone naturally produced by the body also plays a major factor.

Dr. Higgins also deems obesity as an epidemic for the region, particularly here in The Bahamas. He explains how these two conditions interact.

Now when it comes to treatment, there are several options, the most widely known procedure is a hysterectomy.

Recently introduced to the region within the past two years is a procedure known as uterine artery embolization.

Dr. Higgins explains that the doctor gains access to a blood vessel in the groin area to access an artery that supplies the fibroid.

He says 97 percent of patients return to normal menstrual cycles and two out of three women see a 50 percent reduction in bulk symptoms following this procedure.
