$1.4M Contract Signed for South Andros Water Works

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – 1500 South Androsians should see improvements in their water supply soon.

The Water and Sewerage Corporation is signing a contract with a local company for more than a million dollars worth of work that they say will put an end to low pressure and late-night supply disruptions.

Government, inking a deal with Apex Pavers Company Limited, that totals just over $1 million for the construction of new transmission water mains linking the corporation’s reverse osmosis plant in Kemps Bay to the Wellfield in the Bluff, South Andros.

Residents there have had to deal with frequent disruptions for years.

But according to MP for Mangrove Cay, South & Central Andros and Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister with responsibility for Water and Sewerage Leon Lundy, today’s signing is the first step in the right direction.

“What this would do is provide reliability. Right now there is some distribution issues with the pressure.This would actually sure up the amount of water that we are receiving down in the southern end of South Andros. So definitely this would be impactful right away I could tell you the residents sometimes they have to have disruptions that occur between 10 and 5 o’clock in the morning. So definitely this would be a major impact right away.”

Lundy says the project was awarded to Apex Pavers following a competitive bidding process.

It includes the installation and commissioning of nearly 13,400 feet of four inch water mains, 10 new service laterals, and associated Fittings.

“Once we’ve completed the water installation, we move straight into the road prep and profiling. And we’ll come behind that with the actual paving of the roads. Where looking to start in the northern section and work our way south along the kings highway.”

Simmons adds the project, also provides employment opportunities for South Androsians.

“As we ramp up currently we have anywhere from 10-15 persons on the ground that we’re looking to higher. They are specialist so we’ll be looking to higher a lot of localsupport with the incidery stuff in the road aspect as well as the water. So as we start laying the pipes and cutting the trenches we will be bringing in lord personnel from the islands to assist us with that.”

As for when work will start?

Officials say they’ve already begun by digging trenches.
