Resolutions For Small Island States Admist Global Uncertainty

MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA – It was straight to business for CARICOM delegates and leaders as day one of meetings and diplomatic talks kicked off in Montego Bay Monday.

Prime Minister Philip Davis says the goal coming out of these sessions is to find common ground, and put forward resolutions that speak to the challenges facing Small Island Developing States.

At a time when global tensions and economic shifts are impossible to ignore, unity is crucial.

Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell says what we’re seeing globally is “quite difficult”, pointing specifically to unilateral U.S. tariffs, and how they’re affecting the cost of living across the region.

Also front and center is the the region’s escalating battle with gang violence.

Mitchell says for The Bahamas, the focus isn’t just on enforcement, but on tackling the social issues that feed criminal activity.

As discussions continue, leaders are hoping to walk away with strategies that help build a stronger, more resilient Caribbean, one that can hold its own in a rapidly changing world.
