Expert Talks Motorcycle Safety Amidst Deadly Family Island Crashes

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It’s become an all-too familiar scenario, young men losing their lives in fatal motorcycle accidents, and some of them are not even caused by a collision with other drivers.

Statistics show that of the 66 traffic fatalities last year, 12 of them were motorcycle riders.

The grim statistics have sounded the alarm, cautioning cyclists to follow the rules and laws put in place to keep them safe.

Second Officer-in-charge of the Traffic Division, Superintendent Coran Jennings speaks about the worrying trend:

“We reach out to these cyclist on a daily basis to wear…helmets, drive within the speed limits and within the confines of the traffic laws and the laws of The Bahamas.”

“On the islands there’s not as much traffic as there is in the city in Nassau or Freeport, so those on the islands, speed normally is a factor with those accidents,” he said.

That’s exactly what we’ve seen recently.

On June 30th, 18-year-old Jimmy Johnson died, and another teen was injured after their motorcycle crashed into a car in Central Andros.

Just last week, 22-year-old Kevon Taylor was killed after his motorcycle collided with another vehicle in Farmer’s Hill, Exuma just after 1AM on Monday morning.

As a ride, once you select what type of motorcycle you ride, that’s what you decide what type of helmet you should wear…,” Jennings said.

Police are also calling on established riding or biking clubs to mentor young riders.

Police are encouraging you to think of your family every time you kick start your bike and rev the throttle.
