ORLANDO, FLORIDA – The musical culture of The Bahamas is on full display for audiences in Orlando with the production of “Music of The Bahamas”.

The audience response alone told the story.

Cheers and laughter filled the Orlando Shakes Theatre Saturday night as a cast of 25 Bahamians sang and danced to the music of The Bahamas—an on-stage historical footprint of the origins of indigenous musical genres native to The Bahamas.

First performed in 1981, this cast is here in Orlando at the invitation of the local Shakespeare Theatre Company, who saw it in Nassau a few years ago during a Shakespeare in Paradise performance.

Adrian Archer – Musical director
“So they offered to fund the cast travel, and cast accommodations if we would do it here. And so we are really pleased to bring it here, because there is a great Caribbean diaspora in this area. So lots of people know about it, and are excited about it and are coming to see it.”

Third-time musical director, Adrian Archer, was able to get the cast of well-known performers and newcomers in top form for the international spotlight.

Adrian Archer – Musical director
“You come to a place like this that is amazing on every level, that is four times the audience than the last time you performed it, so getting the cast used to the sound, the lack of the ambient sound they are used to, those sort of things you have to worry about and at the last minute have to make changes to accommodate the space that you are in.”

And the team did not disappoint Bahamians in the local diaspora and Americans—who made up the audience.

Audience members
“Absolutely loved it. It was so energetic.”

“I am so proud to see what I just witnessed, so proud and everyone needs to see this. And the history I learned tonight, and I thought I knew everything about The Bahamas.”

“It was really great and I would love for a lot of people to witness it like I have.”
