Parliamentary Commissioner: “We Are Ready to Move Forward”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Parliamentary Commissioner Harrison Thompson shared that his team is preparing now for nomination day following the official announcement by National Security Minister Wayne Munroe that the by-election is set for November 24.

For everything to be official, the notices will be placed in the newspapers on Tuesday.

This comes after the death of the late Golden Isles Member of Parliament Vaughn Miller last month.

The Progressive Liberal Party, the Free National Movement and the Coalition of Independents all have candidates ratified for the area – Senator Darron Pickstock, Brian Brown and Brian Rolle respectively.

If they all decide to contest the seat, here’s what they need to have on nomination day.

“They need to have a declaration of their assets and they need to have the nomination paper with at least five registered voters in that constituency and fill out the nomination forms,” Thompson said.

I also asked the parliamentary commissioner whether having the by-election impedes preparation for a general election that’s expected sometime next year.

“We are ready, we are ready to move forward, we already have all of our materials ready,” he said.

“It wouldn’t impede the progress, we were already in the planning process which will be sometime next year, the by-election is just a process so it wouldn’t be anything to cause us to have sleepless nights.”

As for accessibility at the polling stations, particularly for those with special needs, the parliamentary commissioner said they are as much as possible.

“We believe they are ready,” Thompson said. “We used them in the past and my team is even going out this afternoon to see if it’s ready for the process.”
