FRANCE – The director of the Louvre in Paris faced lawmakers Wednesday after a brazen daylight heist netted more than $100 million in jewels from the museum’s Apollo Gallery.

Laurence des Cars said she offered her resignation, but it was rejected, calling the incident “a terrible defeat.”
She admitted to a long-standing weakness in the Louvre’s perimeter security, saying a key exterior camera was facing the wrong way.
Police say four main suspects are being hunted in what they describe as a highly organized operation.
The Louvre has reopened, but the Apollo Gallery remains closed.
