The History of Free National Movement Leadership

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Free National Movement has a rich history dating back to 1970, and while it’s had its high points over the years, it’s also had some low ones.

In fact, many consider the party at a crossroads, with current leader Michael Pintard’s role as leader under the microscope after the party lost May’s general election.

However, it’s not the first time the party has found itself in this position.

So, here’s a bit of history.

The FNM was first led by Sir Cecil Wallace Whitfield from 1970-1972.

Sir Kendal Issacs took over and served as party leader until 1979, but the FNM lost both the 72 and 77 elections.

Issacs continued to lead the FNM into the 1980s until 87, when Whitfield returned as leader briefly until his death in 1990.

Despite this, brighter days were ahead for the party.

Former Prime Minister Hubert Ingraham was voted as leader that same year, ushering in what’s known as the “deliverance” period.

Ingraham went on to lead the party to back-to-back victories in ’92 and ’97, but despite his success, he pledged he’d no longer serve as party leader and prime minister after the 2002 General Election loss to the Progressive Liberal Party.

This paved the way for Tommy Tunrquest, who was voted leader-elect in 2001, and while he lost his seat in the 2002 election, he remained leader of the party as a senator.

However, Turnquest’s time as leader didn’t last long, because shortly before the 2007 General Election, Ingraham returned to lead the FNM after repeated calls to restore political trust and energy within the party.

That same year the FNM was victorious at the polls, but that wasn’t the case in 2012 when they were defeated at the polls.

Ingraham resigned as party leader and gave up his North Abaco seat, officially retiring from public life, making way for Dr. Hubert Minnis to take the helm.

Dr. Minnis, served as party leader and eventually prime minister after winning the 2017 election.

Meanwhile, when the party suffered defeat during the 2021 snap election, Dr. Minnis remained as leader for a year before being voted out and replaced by current party leader Michael Pintard.

This move caused a divide in the party, as Minnis eventually distanced himself from the FNM and ran as an independent candidate in the 2026 General Election.
